Walter Schwartz sent us this pic which he found in a shop, Ten Thousand Villages, in Austin, Texas.
“The maps are produced by women artisans of the “St. Mary’s Mahila Shikshan Kendra,” a Dominican Sisters organization that teachers the art Kathiyawadiembroidery with tiny mirrors. It’s 24 inches x 36 inches and is made of cotton. The women are typically the family’s sole wage earners and live in a poor section of Ahmedabad. They design, stamp, embroider, wash, iron, sew and QC.
