Mappery For the love of maps

Hatfield House Sundial

Paul Hardy sent us this picture of a sundial at Hatfield House.

“If you are short of maps in the wild, attached is an interesting map not far from where I live. It is a big sundial, installed in 2011 at Hatfield House to mark their 400th anniversary. I assume it is in Gnomic projection. The map on it is centred on Hatfield which is 20 miles north of London, UK. It’s hard to read until you realise  the land is white and the sea black!

The Old Palace at Hatfield house was where Queen Elizabeth lived as a child. The 1611 house  has been the home of the Cecil family continuously ever since!  The house interior is splendid and Jacobean.”

Thanks Paul
