Mappery For the love of maps

Zadie Smith Roots

Elizabeth spotted this poster advertising the new portrait of author Zadie Smith at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

The portrait by Toyin Ojih Odutola includdes an intriguing map background. In an interview Zadie Smith said “And in the map of North West London behind me, which was my father’s chosen home (he was a Croydon boy originally) and became my birthright. And in the faint trace of a palm tree that links me to my mother’s homeland, Jamaica, and through her mother and her mother and so on back to some corner of West Africa I’ll never be able to identify exactly.”
